Iona College is a private Catholic college in New Rochelle, New York.

History

In 1919, the Irish Christian Brothers founded a grade school called Iona School. In 1940, the founding community came up with the idea to start a small, inexpensive college for New York's working-class sons. The Christian Brothers formed Iona College, recognizing that graduates could not afford the local universities. They named the college after Iona, the island monastery of St. Columba located off the west coast of Scotland.

Academics & Campus

The campus occupies 45 acres, and the college itself is divided into two academic units, a School of Arts & Science and a business school. Iona also offers fourteen study abroad programs in various countries and graduate courses in Manhattan. There are semester-long, summer, and spring programs in France, Italy, Ireland, England, Spain, Greece, the Netherlands, and Poland.

Through its two schools, the college offers 60+ undergraduate, and 45 graduate programs, an honors program with special courses, and off-campus opportunities. The institution is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

As of 2018-19, Iona College enrolls roughly 4,000 students representing 47 countries and 35 states. On campus, there are over 80 active clubs Greek fraternities, sororities, and media organizations. Greek Life includes one international fraternity, one local fraternity, two national fraternities, two national sororities, and four local sororities.

Athletics -Gaels

The sports teams are part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and compete in NCAA Division.

The Gaels athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, track & field, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, volleyball, and water polo.

Men: baseball, basketball, track & field, golf, rowing, soccer, swimming & diving, and water polo.

The men's baseball team has participated in ten NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championships. The women's basketball team has one appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament and five appearances in the Women's National Invitation Tournaments. Go Maroon & Gold!
