ISU (Illinois State University) is a public university that is accredited by the Commission on Institution of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. According to the 2021 U.S. News and World Report, ISU is ranked No. 105 out of America’s largest public national universities.
Founded as a training school for teachers in 1857, Illinois State Normal University is the oldest public university in Illinois. The teacher preparation programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and certified by the Illinois State Board of Education. In accordance with its mission, the school’s motto has been updated to “Gladly we Learn and Teach.”

ISU offers 350 registered student organizations which range from intramural sports to branches of nationally recognized RSOs. It is also the home of the Gamma Phi Circus which is the oldest collegiate circus in the world, founded in 1929. The Illinois State University Greek community was established in 1967 and 14% of the student population are active members.
Athletics - Redbirds
Illinois State University’s athletic teams are members of the Missouri Valley Conference and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. They are known as the “Redbirds,” in reference to the state bird, the cardinal. The teams play at the NCAA Division I level (FCS in football).
The Redbirds’ athletics program includes:
Women: basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, track and field, swimming and diving, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.
Men: basketball, baseball, football, track and field, and cross country, golf, and tennis.
The softball team played in the Women’s College World Series 8 times and the baseball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1969. Illinois State holds the NCAA Division I FCS record for the most tied football games with 66.
