Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is a public university in Allendale, Michigan. It is one of the 100 largest universities in the U.S. According to the U.S. News & World Report, GVSU is ranked 3rd in the “Top Public Regional Universities in the Midwest.”

 

History

In 1958, the Michigan Legislature commissioned a four-year college in the Grand Rapids area. A year later, the legislature established the college and named it Grand Valley State College. The name was changed to Grand Valley State University after the Michigan Legislature passed a law in 1987. In the 1980s and 90s, added satellite campuses or centers in downtown Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, and Traverse City.

 

Academics & Campus

The main campus is roughly 12 miles west of Grand Rapids and is situated on 1,322 acres. It is located above the Grand River next to a system of ravines. The university is home to three on-campus apartment complexes and 29 residence halls. GVSU has two other campuses in the surrounding area of Allendale. There are also smaller centers in Muskegon, Detroit, and Traverse City. Additionally, Grand Valley offers classes on its international campus in Holland.

 

Within its eight colleges, Grand Valley offers 200+ areas of study, including 82 undergraduate majors, 74 graduate emphases, 36 graduate programs, and certificate programs. The Higher Learning Commission accredits it. GVSU provides over 4,000 study programs that are either affiliated with or independent from the school.

 

In the fall of 2018, Grand Valley University served almost 25,000 students representing 83 Michigan counties and many other states and foreign countries. As of fall 2016, the university offers 486+ student-run organizations, including Academic and Professional, Cultural Honorary, Interfaith and Religious, Media, Performing Arts, Service and Advocacy, Special Interests, and Student Life Sports. Approximately 7.8% of the student population participates in 30 fraternities and sororities.

Athletics – Lakers

The sports teams compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

 

The Lakers athletic teams include:

 

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

 

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field.

 

Since 2002, seven sports teams have won 20 NCAA Division II National Championships.
