George Mason University (Mason or GMU) is a public research university in George Mason, Virginia. The university is ranked among R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.

History

In 1957, the university was initially established as a Northern Virginia branch of the University of Virginia but became an independent institution in 1972. The university is named after the Founding Father George Mason. Today, it is the largest four-year public university in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Academics & Campus

The Fairfax Campus is on 677 acres of land in a suburban environment in George Mason, Virginia, located south of the City of Fairfax in central Fairfax County. GMU also has three other campuses in the state; Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William. There is a fifth campus in South Korea.

The university has four schools and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. As of 2017, Mason enrolled 34,904 students, making it the largest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It offers 500 student groups, including 41 fraternities and sororities.

Athletics –Patriots

The sports teams compete in Division I of the NCAA as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Patriots' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.

The Patriots at GMU have won 2 NCAA team championships. There have been 23 student-athletes that have claimed 35 individual national championships. 13 teams have made 117+ NCAA postseason appearances. Go Green & Gold!
