Furman University is a private liberal arts university in Greenville, South Carolina. In 2019, it was the highest-ranked institution of higher learning in the state. According to Forbes, Furman is one of the best universities in the South.

History

In 1825, Furman Academy and Theological Institution was established by the South Carolina Baptist Convention. A year later, Furman University was founded and named after the clergyman Richard Furman. It is the oldest private institution of higher learning in South Carolina. In 1850, the state legislature chartered the university, and it became a secular university in 1992.

Academics & Campus

The campus is located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the upstate region. The 750-acre wooded campus features a 40-acre lake. Furman University offers majors and programs in 42 subjects. There are roughly 2,700 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students enrolled. The student body represents 46 states and 53 foreign countries. Students can participate in five fraternities and seven sororities.

Athletics –Paladins

The sports teams compete in NCAA Division I (FCS) and are one of the smallest NCAA Division I schools in the nation.

The Paladins' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross-country, golf, lacrosse, softball, soccer, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field.

In 1988, the Paladins won the NCAA I-AA National Football Championship and was a runner-up two other times. The men's basketball team has made six appearances at the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. The men's golf team has 13 Southern Conference championship wins. Go Purple & White!
