Ferris State University (FSU) is a public university in Big Rapids, Michigan. It is the ninth-largest university in the state. FSU is the only public university in Michigan to be established by an individual.
In 1884, the Big Rapids Industrial School was founded by Woodbridge Nathan Ferris, an educator from Tioga County, New York, who then became the governor of the State of Michigan and later served in the U.S. Senate. In 1950, FSU joined Michigan’s Higher Education System. Sadly, the campus was destroyed by a fire that same year, and the only building to survive was the Alumni Building. Over 117 buildings were built since the fire. In 1987, the school became Ferris State University.
Academics & Campus
The campus is on an 880+ acre area, on the southern edge of the City of Big Rapids and four blocks south of the historic central business district. Two and four-year degrees are provided through its eight colleges, and graduate degrees are offered through six academic colleges.
In total, there are 170+ educational programs to choose from. Ferris State University also grants professional doctorate degrees through its optometry and pharmacy colleges and a multidisciplinary doctorate of education in community college leadership.
The total enrollment is 14,560 students who either study on the main campus, at one of the 19 off-campus locations, or online. The university is home to 27 Greek organizations divided in the following groups: Interfraternity Council Fraternities, Panhellenic Council Sororities, Black Greek Council Fraternities & Sororities, and Professional Fraternities & Sororities.
