Fordham University is a private Jesuit research university in New York City, New York. It is the third-oldest university in the state and the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the northeastern U.S. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, Fordham was ranked No. 66 in “Best National Universities.”
In 1841, St. John’s College was founded by John Hughes and a coadjutor bishop of New York. Shortly after, the school was taken over by the Society of Jesus and is now a Jesuit-affiliated independent school under the supervision of a lay board of trustees. The school was renamed Fordham after the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx. In 1904, the Regents of the University of the State of New York allowed the board of trustees to open a law school and a medical school.
Academics & Campus
The university is composed of ten constituent colleges, four are undergraduate, and six are postgraduate. There are three campuses in southern New York: the Westchester campus in West Harrison, the Rose Hill campus in the Bronx, and the Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan. In addition, Fordham operates a study abroad center in London and field offices in Spain and South Africa.
All undergraduates at the university must complete the Core curriculum, which is 17 courses in nine disciplines: Classical or modern languages, fine arts, English, philosophy and ethics, history, mathematical/computational reasoning, natural science, religious studies, and social science. In total, Fordham offers degrees in 60+ disciplines.
There are approximately 15,300 enrolled, representing 65+ countries. There are more than 130 clubs and organizations at the Rose Hill campus, and at the Lincoln Center, there are 50.
