Florida International University (FIU) is a public research university located in University Park, Florida. It belongs to the 12-campus State University System of Florida and is ranked among R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity. For the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, FIU was ranked as the 95^th best public university in the nation and 187^th overall among all U.S. universities.

History

Senate Bill 711 was introduced in 1964 by Florida Senator Robert M. Haverfield. The bill instructed the state Board of Education and the Board of Regents to begin developing a state university in Miami. The bill was signed into law by governor W. Haydon Burns in 1965, officially founding Florida International University.

Academics & Campus

There are two major campuses in Miami-Dade County; the main campus, University Park, and its regional campus in Biscayne Bay. Along with several branch campuses and research facilities across South Florida and in Tianjin, China; Nervi and Genoa, Italy. The main campus encompasses 344 acres with 23 colleges and schools, plus over 40 centers and labs. FIU has quickly become the largest college in the greater Miami territory, along with being the largest university in South Florida, the second-largest in Florida, and the fourth-largest in the entire United States.

FIU is one of the state's primary graduate research universities, offering 191 programs of study with 280+ majors. It also provides several graduate programs such as architecture, business administration, engineering, law, and medicine, offering a total of 81 master's degrees, 24 doctoral degrees, and three professional degrees.

Florida International University admits 58,787 students that represent 130 countries and all 50 U.S. states. It allows the student body to be involved in 300+ student clubs, organizations, honor and professional societies, and more.

Athletics –Panthers

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I as part of the Conference USA.

The Panthers' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross-country, track, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and beach volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, track, football, and soccer.

The Panthers have won 5 athletic championships and various individual national championships. Go Blue & Gold!
