The Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) is a private research university located in Melbourne, Florida. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.” According to Times Higher Education, FIT is ranked as one of the top 1,000 universities globally.



The school began as Brevard Engineering College and was founded in 1958. In 1961, the college moved from Melbourne Municipal Airport to its current location in Melbourne, Florida. That same year, the first graduate received their associate degree. The institution was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1964. Two years later, the name was officially changed to the Florida Institute of Technology.


Academics & Campus

The 130-acre residential campus is located near the Florida Tech Research Park and Orlando Melbourne International Airport. The institute has a three-building set of suites, six traditional residence halls, a seven-building set of suites, and an eight-building complex. There are also apartment-style housing options located near the campus.


FIT comprises four academic colleges: Aeronautics, Business, Engineering & Science, and Psychology & Liberal Arts. The university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Florida Tech also provides specialized graduate degree programs in Aberdeen Proving Ground; Alexandria, Virginia; Dover, New Jersey; Fort Eustis, Virginia; Fort Lee, Virginia; and eight other sites.


In 2013, Florida Tech enrolled a student body of 4,633. There is roughly half of the student population enrolled in the College of Engineering. Also, there are 132 active student organizations on campus and several Greek life organizations.

Athletics – Panthers

The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division II level as a member of the Sunshine State Conference.


The Panthers athletic teams include:


Women: basketball, cross country, distance track, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, and volleyball.


Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, distance track, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, and swimming.


Alumni Tim Wakefield set the home run record in 1987 and became a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. In 1988 and ’91, the men’s soccer team won the NCAA Division II National Championship. Student-athlete, Daniela Iacobelli, won the National NCAA Division II Woman’s Golf Championship in 2007. Go Panthers!
