Fort Lewis College is a public liberal arts college in Durango, Colorado.

History

In 1878, the first Fort Lewis army post was constructed in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and was relocated to Hesperus two years later. It was converted into a federal, off-reservation Native American boarding school in 1891. Then, in 1911, the fort’s property and buildings were transferred to establish an agricultural and mechanic arts high school to educate Native American students for free.

In the 1930s, the Fort Lewis high school expanded into a two-year college, and in 1948, it was controlled by the State Board of Agriculture and was renamed Fort Lewis A&M College. It awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1964. FLC joined the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges in 1995. It became independent of the Colorado State University system in 2002.

Academics & Campus

In southwestern Colorado, the campus covers 247 acres and sits atop a mesa that overlooks the Animas River Valley and downtown Durango. The campus comprises two apartment buildings, six residence halls, 14 academic buildings, and more.

Due to its unique origins as a Native American boarding school, Fort Lewis follows a 1911 mandate to give Native Americans free tuition. In 2008, the U.S. Department of Education designated the college one of six Native American-serving, non-tribal colleges.

Within its four academic units, Fort Lewis College offers 30 bachelor’s degrees and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. It is also accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
