Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is a public university in Fort Myers, Florida. It is the second youngest member in the State University System of Florida. For the 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings, FGCU was No. 68 overall in Regional Universities South.

 

History

In 1991, the chair of the Board of Regents, Charles B. Edwards, lobbied the Florida Legislature to pass legislation recommending that the tenth university of Florida be built in the Southwest Region. The governor of Florida at the time, Lawton Chiles, signed the bill authorizing Florida Gulf Coast University. The school was built on a 760-acre site in the south Fort Myers area, which was selected by the Board of Regents and donated by Ben Hill Griffin III.

 

Academics & Campus

The campus is located in unincorporated Southwest Florida in Lee County. There are three satellite campus locations: the Atrium in Fort Myers, Herald Court Centre in Punta Gorda, and Naples. On the periphery of the campus are three separate housing areas for undergrads.

 

Within its six main colleges, FGCU offers six doctoral degrees, twelve graduate certificates, 25 master’s, and 58 bachelor’s degrees. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition, undergraduate engineering degrees are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

 

There are 15,373 students enrolled. FGCU is home to 250+ Registered Student Organizations such as Student Government. There are also 28 sorority and fraternity chapters on campus that are governed by the Multicultural Greek Council, the Panhellenic Council, National PanHellenic Council, and the Interfraternity Council.

Athletics – Eagles

The sports teams participate in the Atlantic Sun Conference in NCAA Division I.  

 

The Eagles athletic teams include:

 

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball.

 

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis.

 

The baseball team has sent several players to professional leagues, including the famous all-star pitcher Chris Sale from the Boston Red Sox. In 2008, the women’s basketball team was the first team to qualify for the WNIT in its first season of Division I sports. They were also the first team in the Atlantic Sun Conference to win a post-season game since 1998. Go Eagles!
