About Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University Rattlers

Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University (FAMU) is a public historically black land-grant university in Tallahassee, Florida. According to the 2020 U.S. News & World Report, FAMU is Tier 1 among national universities. It is ranked among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

Academics & Campus

The campus consists of 132 buildings spread across 420 acres and is located on the highest geographic hill in Tallahassee. Other locations include a law school campus in Orlando, Florida, and the Research and Development Center in Quincy, Florida. Within its 14 schools and colleges, FAMU offers 54 bachelor's degrees, 29 master's degrees, one professional degree, and 12 doctoral degrees. Since 1935, the university has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Florida A&M is the third-largest historically black university in the United States, with a student population of almost 10,000 students representing all regions of the nation and many foreign countries. The community at the university is referred to as FAMU or members of the Rattler Nation. The student body consists mainly of undergraduates, and 84.1% of the students are African American. What is the History of Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University?

In 1885, Black Abolitionist Jonathan C. Gibbs first introduced legislation to create the State Normal College for Colored Students. It was officially established in 1887, and the name changed to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1953. FAMU is the only publicly funded historically black institution in the state.

Which NCAA Sports do the Rattlers Play?

The sports teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Rattlers' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross-country, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, football, golf, and track and field.

The football team has won the Black College National Championship eight times. In 2008, the wrestling team placed third in their region and had a couple of national placers. The men's basketball team has qualified for the NCAA tournament three times. Go Orange & Green!
