In Johnson City, Tennessee, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is a public research university. It is part of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee and the fourth-largest university in the state. The university is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

Founded in 1911, East Tennessee State Normal School educated teachers in the area. It became a college in 1925 and gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1927. The college was expanded in 1943 and began offering a range of liberal arts programs. In 1963, East Tennessee State College became East Tennessee State University.

Academics & Campus

The 340-acre campus is in the northeastern tip of the state that borders Virginia and North Carolina. ETSU also has off-campus centers in Kingsport, Elizabethton, and Sevierville. The university has ten schools and offers 50+ minors, 22 undergraduate majors, 14 graduate degrees, eight graduate certificates, and a Medical Professions Advisement program.

There are 14,500+ students enrolled at the school. East Tennessee State University is home to numerous Greek organizations. The National Pan-Hellenic Council offers five sororities and fraternities, the Pan- Hellenic Council offers five sororities, and the Interfraternity Council offers eight fraternities. Five percent of the student body is involved in Greek life.

Athletics -Buccaneers

The sports teams are members of the NCAA Division I Southern Conference.

The Buccaneers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, triathlon, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field.

In 2013, the baseball team won their first ASUN Conference Championship and their second NCAA Regional berth. In 2009 and 2010, the men's and women's basketball teams earned berths to the NCAA championship after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference tournaments. In 2007, the women's basketball team made its first appearance at the NCAA tournament. Go Blue & Gold!
