Eastern Michigan University (EMU) is a public research university in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

Founded as Michigan State Normal School in 1849, it was the first normal school in Michigan and outside the original 13 colonies. In 1899, the school became the Michigan State Normal College and became the first teacher-training school in the U.S. to have a four-year degree program. In 1959, the college achieved university status, renaming the school to Eastern Michigan University.

Academics & Campus

The overall campus is spread across 800 acres and comprises 120+ buildings, including 14 residence halls and eight colleges and schools. In addition, there are courses offered at eight satellite locations: EMU-Brighton, EMU-Detroit, EMU-Jackson, EMU-Livonia, EMU-Monroe, EMU-Northern Michigan, and the Kresge Environmental Center in Lapeer, Michigan.

EMU offers 200 majors and minors and 170+ graduate programs. The large university also offers online courses and degrees. It has an enrollment of over 23,000 students, and roughly 5,000 students live on campus. Eastern Michigan University is home to 340+ student clubs and organizations. It has an Interfraternity Council that is made up of eight fraternities, the College Panhellenic Council offers nine sororities, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council consists of nine historically African American fraternities and sororities, five fraternities, and four sororities.

The sports teams belong to the Mid-American Conference

The Eagles athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and track and field.

The athletic teams at Eastern Michigan have won 13 NAIA Division I national championships and three NCAA Division II national championships in the following sports: baseball, men's crossing country, men's swimming and diving, and men's indoor/outdoor track and field. Go Eagles!
