Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia. It is the second-oldest private institution of higher education in the state. The university is ranked 21^st among national universities by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, Emory is classified among R1: Doctoral Universities—Very high research activity.

History

In 1836, Emory College was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church, named in honor of Methodist bishop John Emory. In late 1863, the American Civil War came to Georgia, and the school was used as a hospital as well as a headquarters for the Union Army. The original campus in Oxford, Georgia, covers a 56-acre area.

During the Reconstruction Era, Emory College suffered financial troubles along with the entire Southeastern U.S. In 1915, the school was relocated to Druid Hills and was recharted as Emory University. The Emory University School of Law was built in 1916.

Academics & Campus

The main campus is located in a 600-acre area in Atlanta's historic neighborhood, Druid Hills. Peavine Creek runs through the campus. Emory has nine academic divisions, including a five-year dual degree program in engineering, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology. It also offers a dual master's degree in social work with the University of Georgia. There is a highly selective honors program at the university for over 25% of high-performing undergraduates. Emory Healthcare comprises seven major hospitals and is the largest healthcare system in Georgia.

For Fall 2019, the total enrollment was 15,398 students, with 26% of them being Georgia residents, and the remaining coming from the other 49 states, D.C., and 100+ countries. Since 1840, fraternities have existed on campus. Today, Greek-letter sororities and fraternities comprise roughly 30% of the student population.

Athletics -Eagles

The sports teams are members of the NCAA's Division III in the University Athletic Association. There are 600+ student-athletes at Emory.

The Eagles athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field.

In the U.S. News & World Report, the university ranks among top schools out of the best national universities and the Directors' Cup of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics for the best all-around athletics program. Emory has won a total of 27 Division III national championships and 206 UAA team championships. Go Eagles!
