Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is a public, historically black college located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It is a member institution of the University of North Carolina system as well as the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

History

The State Colored Normal School at Elizabeth City was founded by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1891. The two-year normal school taught and trained African American teachers to instruct primary students in the common schools throughout the state. In 1961, the college became a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Two years later, it was renamed Elizabeth City State College. The school changed its name again in 1969 to Elizabeth City State University to reflect the expansion and newly formed graduate programs. The University of North Carolina System was established in 1972, and ECSU became one of sixteen universities to join.

Academics & Campus

The campus encompasses 200 acres. Elizabeth City State provides four master's degrees and 28 bachelor's degrees. It is home to the only four-year aviation science degree program in North Carolina. The university enrolls almost 2,500 students with various on-campus organizations to choose from, including fraternities, sororities, intramural sports, and a radio and TV station.

Athletics -Vikings

The sports teams are a member of the NCAA Division II in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. ECSU has participated in the conference since 1957.

The Vikings athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, cross country, football, and golf.
