The Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit is a private Catholic research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The university is the only Spiritan institution of higher education across the globe. It is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.”
In 1878, Fr. Joseph Strub and the Holy Ghost Fathers founded the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost. In 1911, the school became the first Catholic university-level institution in the state. Duquesne University is named after Michel-Ange Duquesne de Menneville, an 18th-century governor of New France. The graduate school was established in 1914.
Academics & Campus
Duquesne University has tripled in size from a 12.5-acre area on Boyd’s Hill to a 49-acre area in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood. The main Bluff campus comprises 31 buildings, including a health sciences facility, a multipurpose recreation center, a theater-classroom complex, and two recording studios. The university also maintains an associate campus in Rome, Italy, that is managed by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth and has ten schools.
Within its nine schools, Duquesne offers 189 academic programs and degree programs at the baccalaureate, professional, master's, and doctoral levels. There are more than 9,300 students enrolled, including international students from 80+ countries. Over 3,600 students live in the university’s five residence halls and one apartment complex.

Athletics – Dukes
The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The football and bowling team participate in the Northeast Conference.
The Dukes athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, bowling, cross country, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Men: basketball, cross country, football, soccer, tennis, and track and field.
The men’s basketball team has two appearances in the national championship. In 1955, the team won the NIT championship. Go Red & Blue!
