Dixie State University (DSU) is a public university in St. George, Utah.

 

History


Originally known as St. George Stake Academy, the institution was founded in 1911 by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It would later become a state school of the Utah System of Higher Education. In 2000, it became Dixie State College. Eleven years later, the Utah State Legislature and the Utah State Governor signed a bill in support of the college to transition to university status. In 2013, it was officially renamed Dixie State University.

 

Academics & Campus

The main campus is located in the Dixie region of St. George. There is also the Hurricane Education Center campus located in Hurricane, Utah. In the middle of the DSU campus is the Encampment Mall, where Mormon pioneers stayed in 1861.

 

DSU offers 150+ academic programs such as four master’s degrees, 11 associate degrees, 23 certificates/endorsements, 44 minors, and 45 bachelor’s degrees. In 2018, the university added its first graduate degree program in accounting.

 

In the fall of 2019, 11,193 students were enrolled. 56% of the student body are female, and 44% are male. In the state of Utah, Dixie State was among the top three institutions for diversity, with 23% of the student population being minorities.

Athletics – Trailblazers

The sports teams compete in PacWest Conference. The football team is a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member, and the women’s swimming team competes in the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference.

 

The Trailblazers athletic teams include:

 

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

 

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, and soccer.

 

The university has 34 NCAA Division II tournament appearances, has won 16 PacWest Championships and five PacWest Community Engagement Awards. In 2011, the men’s basketball team appeared in the Sweet Sixteen, and the women’s volleyball appeared in 2014. The women’s softball team has three College World Series appearances and, in 2015, was a runner-up. Go Red, White, & Blue!
