Delta State University (DSU) is a public university in Cleveland, Mississippi.
In 1924, Delta State Teachers College was founded by the State of Mississippi. After Senators Arthur Marshall William B. Roberts co-sponsored Senate Bill No. 236 and Mississippi Governor Henry L. Whitfield signed it, the college was established. The bill was then sponsored by Nellie Nugent Somerville, the first woman to serve in the Mississippi state legislature.
In 1963, Delta State was fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges. It developed graduate programs in 1965, and the state legislature authorized the school to be renamed Delta State University in 1974.
Academics & Campus
The campus is located on 332 acres and is comprised of 64 buildings. The university offers 12 bachelor’s degrees in 42 majors and eight master’s degrees, including the Education Specialist degree and the Doctor of Education degree. Also, Delta State is the only university in Mississippi with a degree in Commercial Aviation.
There are approximately 3,000 students enrolled. On-campus, there are men’s and women's dormitories and apartments for married students. In total, there are six student residence halls on Delta’s campus. Roughly 30% of students reside in on-campus housing. Additionally, many of the students participate in Greek life. The first national social fraternity to charter at the school was Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in 1960.

Athletics – Statesmen
The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division II level and are affiliated with the Gulf South Conference and New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference.
The Statesmen athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, cheerleading, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and tennis.
Men: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, and tennis.
The women’s basketball team has appeared at three AIAW national championships and has a 93-4 record, a 51-game winning streak, and at the time, the longest winning streak in women’s college basketball. They have also played in the NCAA tournament 16 times and have 11 appearances in the Elite Eight. The baseball team has three appearances in the NCAA Division II College World Series.
