California State University, Northridge (CSUN or Cal State Northridge) is a public university and has the second-largest undergraduate population as well as the third-largest total student population of the California State University system. It is classified among “Master’s Colleges & Universities: Larger Programs.” According to 2019 Forbes, CSUN is ranked 92nd out of 300 universities for America’s Best Value Colleges.

History 

The university was originally founded as the Valley satellite campus of California State University, Los Angeles. In 1958, it became an independent college named San Fernando Valley State College. The school didn’t become California State University, Northridge, until 1972.

Academics & Campus

Located in Northridge, CA, CSUN is considered one of the most diverse universities in the nation, with 350,000+ alumni. It offers 134 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in 70 fields, four doctoral degrees, and 24 teaching credentials. Cal State Northridge is consistent in its recognition for having one of the best film and music schools in the world. It also hosts the National Center of Deafness and the annual International Conference on Technology and Persons with Disabilities. 

As of Fall 2020, the total enrollment is 38,815 students, and the school has an acceptance rate of 51.4%. CSUN has the largest enrollment percentage of Latino Americas in the California State University system as well as 3,934 international students in total. The university offers over 300 student clubs and organizations, including five Greek councils.

Athletics –Matadors  

The athletics teams perform at the NCAA Division I level, with the majority of its sports are members of the Big West Conference. The men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams and the men’s volleyball team compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. CSUN is one of only 45 colleges in the U.S. that has a beach volleyball program.

The Matadors’ athletics program includes:

Women: basketball, beach volleyball, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, track and field, and volleyball.

The Matadors have produced two NCAA national runner-up teams, such as the men’s volleyball team and the softball team. The women’s track and field team won six Big West titles, and the men’s track and field team has won three Big West titles. There are also former student-athletes who have gone on to win Olympic medals. Go Red & Black!
