California State University, Dominquez Hills (CSUDH) is a public university in Carson, California. It is a part of the California State University system and was ranked 11th in the 2015 Washington Monthly’s Master’s University Rankings list.
In 1960, the Governor of California Pat Brown funded the development of the campus. The university was established as a response to the need for African Americans to receive higher education and opportunities. In 1977, the California Postsecondary Education Commission endorsed the college trustees’ desire to change the name to California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Academics & Campus
The campus rests on the historic Rancho San Pedro, approximately covering 346 acres. It is the oldest land grant in the Los Angeles area, and the land was in possession of the Dominguez family for seven generations.
The university has a total of 17,763 students enrolled as of fall 2020. CSUDH is one of the most ethnically and economically distinct institutions in the western U.S. It is classified nationwide as a top degree provider for minority undergraduates and graduates with the largest number of African American scholars than any college in the state.
Within its five colleges, Dominguez Hills offers 46 Bachelor’s degrees, 23 Master’s programs, various multi-subject and specialized teaching credentials, and several undergraduates, graduate, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs. CSUDH is ranked first in California for the number of bachelor’s degrees conferred on African American students. Every student has access to more than 90 student clubs and organizations, including 16 fraternities and sororities.

The Toros compete in Division II of the NCAA and are members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Toros’ athletics program includes:
Women: basketball, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball.
Men: baseball, basketball, golf, and soccer.
The men’s golf team won four PGA Works Collegiate Golf Championships. Collectively, the university has earned 3 NCAA team championships at the Division II level. Go Toros!
