About California State University Bakersfield Roadrunners

The California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is a state university and the 20^th school in the 23-campus California State University system. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, it is ranked tied for 52^nd overall out of 127 schools in Regional Universities West.

Academics & Campus

The main campus sits on 375 acres and can accommodate up to 324 students in its dorms. Within its four schools, the university offers 45 bachelor's degrees, 21 master's degrees, and a doctoral program in Educational Leadership.

As of fall 2020, there were more than 11,000 students enrolled. It has the largest enrollment percentage of unknown Americans and the second-largest enrollment percentage of Native Americans in the Cal State system.

The student body has access to 120 recognized student clubs and organizations, which include seven Greek organizations.

What is the Historyof California State University Bakersfield?

Founded as Kern State College in 1965, a committee in the southern San Joaquin Valley decided that Bakersfield would be the location for a four-year university. Bakersfield was the largest isolated metropolitan area in the U.S. without a four-year institution at the time.

In 1968, the school was officially known as California State College, Bakersfield. In 1982, the CSU system was created, and the college was granted university status in 1988.
