Coppin State University (CSU) is a public historically black university and a part of the University System of Maryland. According to College Consensus, it's No. 4 in the “Best HBCU in the Nation” category.
The Colored High School was established in 1900 and originally had a one-year training course to prepare African American primary school teachers. Seven years later, it was separated from the high school and given its own principal. In 1988, the college became part of the new University of Maryland System. It was officially renamed Coppin State University in 2004. The school is named in honor of Jackson Coppin, a very talented African American educator.
Academics & Campus
The 52-acre campus consists of 4 colleges. The university offers 53 academic programs, such as 32 baccalaureate, 11 masters, nine certificate programs, and one doctorate degree. Since 1981, Coppin has a selective honors program for high-performing undergrads. CSU is classified amongst Master’s College & Universities: Small Programs and institutionally authorized by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The university is also a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. There are approximately 2,000+ students, and there are 30+ student organizations on-campus.

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I as a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The Eagles athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, bowling, cross country, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, tennis, and track, and field.
In 2007-08, the men’s basketball team became the first team in NCAA College Basketball history to reach the NCAA Tournament with 20 losses. The women’s bowling team broke school records. Go Blue & Gold!
