Colorado School of Mines is a public research university in Golden, Colorado. From 2016-20, QS World University Ranking rated Mines as the top institution worldwide for mineral and mining engineering. The university is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity”.
In 1859, a supply center for miners and settlers in the area called Golden City was founded. Bishop George M. Randall arrived from Massachusetts in 1866 to the territory and saw a need for higher education facilities. He began planning for a university that would include a school of mines.
The Jarvis Hall Collegiate School opened in 1870, and three years later, the School of Mines was created. The School of Mines became a state institution in 1876, and tuition was initially free to Colorado residents. In 1906 the school became the first of its kind in the globe to operate its own experimental mine and used it to teach students. The mine is located in Mt. Zion.
