Christopher Newport University (CNU) is a public university in Newport News, Virginia. In the U.S. News & World Report, the university is ranked fourth among public regional universities in the South and ranked seventh among all regional universities in the South.

History

Established in 1960, Christopher Newport College was named after Christopher Newport, the captain of one of the ships that carried Jamestown settlers. It was founded as an expansion of the College of William & Mary and offered extension courses. In 1971, the school became a four-year college.

Academics & Campus

CNU provides several four-year bachelor of science and bachelor of arts degrees. It offers graduate programs in applied physics, environmental science, computer science, and teaching. Academic programs are offered through four colleges. The School of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

There are 4,957 students enrolled. More than 200 organizations are hosted at CNU, including numerous religious organizations. Christopher Newport has an extensive Greek life with eight North American Interfraternity Conference-listed fraternities, seven National Panhellenic Conference-listed sororities, and five NPHC-listed Greek organizations.

Athletics –Captains

The university fields a variety of college-level teams on the Division III level. The sports teams compete in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference. The football team is a USA South associate member.

The Captains' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cheerleading, CNU Storm Dance Team, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, sailing, soccer, tennis, and track and field.

In 2002 and 2003, the baseball team made it to the NCAA Division III College World Series. The team has fielded 6 All American Athletes. The women's field hockey team reached the elite 8 in the NCAA Division III National Tournament in 2006. The team has had several all-region players and four all-Americans. Go Blue & Gray!
