Canisius College is a private Jesuit college in Buffalo, New York. In 2017, the school earned the 22^nd spot in the top tier of U.S. News & World Report rankings of America's Best Regional Universities in the North.

History

In 1851, Canisius originated in the Jesuit community and arose from disputed ownership of St. Louis Church in Buffalo. The college served the sons of German immigrants, and the school's early presidents were German Jesuits.

Academics & Campus

The original single building in downtown Buffalo has grown into a thriving campus with 37 facilities on a 72-acre area in a residential neighborhood in North-Central Buffalo. Canisius offers 100+ undergraduate majors, minors and 34+ masters and certificate programs. There are 3,464 students enrolled. The Middle States Association Commission authorizes the college of Higher Education.

On campus, Canisius has roughly 90 clubs and organizations. The three college-approved Greek organizations are the sorority Phi Sigma Sigma, the fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, and the professional organization Alpha Kappa Psi. There are about 40,000 alumni who currently work in the fields of business, journalism, government, law, sport, and medicine.

Athletics –Golden Griffins

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I as Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference members.

The Golden Griffins' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, track, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, track, golf, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and diving.

The men's ice hockey team won its first Atlantic Hockey Championship in 2013. In 2008, the men's lacrosse team won the MAAC tournament and earned its first bid to the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. The women's lacrosse team won four consecutive MAAC Championships. Go Blue & Gold!
