History

Buffalo State College was founded in 1871 as the Buffalo Normal School. The school’s purpose was to train teachers to serve the fast-growing public-school population. To this day, it remains one of only 136 colleges in the nation to host a teacher-preparation program. In 1961, Buff State was the first institution in the SUNY system to offer a study-abroad program which was a semester-long immersion program in Siena, Italy.

Academics & Campus

The university is composed of five schools: The School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Education, the School of Natural and Social Sciences, the School of Professions, and the Graduate School.
There are 8,000+ students enrolled, and the overall admission rate is 62%. Although many students are from the New York City metropolitan area, there are plenty of students from out of state, as well as other foreign countries. Buffalo offers 79 undergraduate majors with 11 honors options, 11 post-baccalaureate teacher certification programs, and 64 graduate programs.

The campus life at Buffalo State provides lots to do with 81 campus organizations, 22 fraternities and sororities, and an International Students Organization. There are 29 buildings which include student centers, academic buildings, athletic buildings, office buildings, and residence halls. Plenty of space for its successful students to thrive.

The faculty are some of the best, with 51 members awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and 7 are honored as SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professors.
