Bucknell University is a private liberal arts university in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. According to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report, Bucknell tied for the 34th in the “National Liberal Arts Colleges” category.
In 1846, the University of Lewisburg was founded by a group of Baptists from White Deer Valley Baptist Church. The university faced financial problems in 1881, and William Bucknell, a charter member of the board of trustees, donated $50,000 and subsequently saved the school. Five years later, the trustees voted to change the name to Bucknell University in honor of William.
Academics & Campus
The campus covers a 445-acre area, south of central Lewisburg and along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. It is also at an elevation of 530 feet above sea level. The main campus is split into Lower Campus and Upper Campus. Bucknell has over 100 buildings and offers almost 50 majors and more than 60 minors.
The undergraduate school enrolls 3,600 students, and there are approximately 50 graduate students. The student body represents all 50 states and 66+ countries. Bucknell University has roughly 200 student clubs and societies, including a significant Greek life presence.

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I as a member of the Patriot League.
The Bison athletic teams include:
Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo.
Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, water polo, and wrestling.
The swimming and diving team won the first Division II NCAA championship in 1964. In 2005, the men’s basketball team appeared at the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and was the first Patriot League to win an NCAA tournament game. Go Blue & Orange!
