What is the History of Alabama State University?

When the Civil War ended, and slavery ended, black Americans finally had the right to education. Funded by nine formerly enslaved people, known as the Marion Nine, ASU is one of the nation's oldest higher education institutions founded specifically for African Americans. Founded in 1867, ASU was first located in Marion, Alabama, and was originally called the Lincoln Normal School.

Today, Alabama State University is located in the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement and continues to be a model of diversity, equality, and opportunity for all.

The Alabama State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has some exceptional student-athletes. They also participate in NCAA Division I in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

The Hornets' intercollegiate athletics program includes:

Women: softball, golf, basketball, bowling, track, cross country, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and cheerleading.

Men: baseball, golf, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, and cheerleading.

The Hornets have collectively won 81 conference championships and five consecutive Commissioner Cup trophies. Go Black and Gold!!
