What is the History of Appalachian State University?

The university was established in 1899 when a group of Watauga citizens began a movement to educate teachers in northwestern North Carolina. While App State was originally a single-purpose teachers' college, it transformed in 1967, forming into a multipurpose regional university. Since then, Appalachian has remained true to its mission: providing students with educational and life-changing experiences.

Which NCAA Sports Do the Mountaineers Play?

More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division I varsity sports at App State. After dominating the Southern Conference for 40+ years, the university joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2014.

The Mountaineers' intercollegiate athletics program includes:

Women- basketball, field hockey, softball, golf, track and field, cross country, soccer, volleyball, and tennis.

Men- baseball, cross country, track and field, basketball, football, golf, and wrestling.

In 2011, the Mountaineer women's basketball team won the 2011 Southern Conference regular-season title. The last time they won the title was in 1966. The next year, in 2012, the baseball team became Southern Conference baseball champions for the first time since 1985. Go Black & Gold!
