Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University is a public historically black land-grant university in Normal, Alabama. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and is a Thurgood Marshall College Fund member.

History

The Huntsville State Normal School for Negroes was established in 1875 when teacher and schoolmaster, William Hooper Councill, received approval for a normal school. An act established by the Alabama State Legislature made this possible. In 1969, the school was officially renamed Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Academics & Campus

The campus consists of 28 buildings and four structures that are listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places. Alabama A&M awards 41 baccalaureate degrees, 23 master's degrees, one EdS, and four Ph.D. degrees. With a total enrollment of 6,108 students, the population represents 44 states and 11 foreign countries. The university is home to 93 student clubs and organizations.

Athletics –Bulldogs

The sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (FCS) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The Bulldogs' athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, bowling, cross-country, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, football, golf, tennis, and track and field.

The Bulldogs have won eleven conference championships in women's volleyball, seven in cross-country, seven in football, nine in men's basketball, two in baseball, and two in women's basketball. Go, Maroon & White!
