Washburn University (WU) is a public university in Topeka, Kansas.

History

Lincoln College was established in 1865 by a charter issued by the General Association of Congregational Ministers and Churches of Kansas and the State of Kansas. The land was donated by abolitionist John Ritchie.

In 1868, after Ichabod Washburn donated $25,000, the institution changed its name to Washburn College. Ichabod was an industrialist, abolitionist, and church deacon. Washburn Municipal University was one of 131 institutions during WWII to participate in the V-12 Navy College Training Program.

Academics & Campus

The 160-acre campus is nestled in the heart of the state's capital city, giving students a big-city feel. It is organized into five schools: the School of Law and the Washburn Institute of Technology, the School of Nursing, the Business School, the School of Applied Studies, and the College of Arts & Sciences.

WU offers 200 areas of study, undergrad and graduate programs, and professional programs in business and law. More than 6,100 undergraduate students and almost 800 graduates study at Washburn. In addition, the student population is active in 100+ campus organizations and clubs. Since 1909, Greek Life has thrived on campus and currently has three Panhellenic Council organizations and four Interfraternity Council organizations.

Athletics -Ichabods

The sports teams are members of the NCAA Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Ichabods athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, and track & field.

The men's basketball team has claimed one national championship. Go Blue & White!
