Valdosta State University (VSU) is a public university in Valdosta, Georgia. As a member of the University System of Georgia, it is one of the four comprehensive universities.

History

Colonel W.S. West, C.R. Ashley, and E.J. McRee helped push legislation up to the House, thus founding an institution in 1906. The school opened as South Georgia State Normal College in 1913. The school became a four-year college in 1922, and the legislature renamed it Georgia State Women's College.

After many programs were added and new upgrades developed, the result was to make the college into a university. In 1993, after receiving state and federal grant funds, the college finally became Valdosta State University. It was the second regional university in the University System of Georgia.

Academics & Campus

The campus is divided into two areas: the main campus and the north campus. The university offers two apartment-style buildings and seven traditional residence halls. In addition, VSU offers classes at Moody Air Force Base in Lowndes County.

Within its five colleges, Valdosta state provides 56 undergraduate degree programs and 40+ graduate programs. Some degrees include the Associate of Arts, the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Science in Education, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of General Studies, and lots more. In addition, the university is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

V-State serves more than 12,000 students, representing all 50 states, 157 Georgia counties, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. There are also 300+ international students enrolled from 76 countries.

VSU is home to 200+ recognized student organizations such as the student radio station, weekly newspaper, and annual literary publication. Approximately ten percent of the undergrad population participates in its 13 nationally recognized fraternities and ten national sororities.
