History

In 1874, River Falls State Normal School was founded to prepare teachers so they can provide better education to the state's frontier regions. It was renamed River Falls State Teachers College in 1927. The state's normal schools became colleges as they saw a significant increase in general education offerings and four-year courses of study leading to a Bachelor of Education degree.

Due to popular demand from returning WWII veterans, the Regents of the State Teachers College system gave the teacher training institution permission to provide bachelor's degrees in liberal arts and fine arts. In 1951, the college was renamed Wisconsin State College—River Falls, and it offered a full four-year liberal arts curriculum.

It was granted university status in 1964 and became a member of the University of Wisconsin System in 1971. The university merged with the former University of Wisconsin and became the University of Wisconsin—River Falls.
