History

In 1956, State Senator Theodore M. Hickey of New Orleans authored the act that founded the University of New Orleans. New Orleans was the largest metropolitan area in the U.S. without a public university at the time. The institution was originally a branch of Louisiana State University and was named Louisiana State University in New Orleans (LSUNO). The university was the first racially integrated public university in the South.

In 1962, the LSU System of Higher Education was founded, and LSUNO became a separate campus. A decade later, the name was changed to the University of New Orleans. Finally, in 2011, the university was transferred to the University of Louisiana system.
