Tennessee State University (TSU) is a public historically black land-grant university in Nashville, Tennessee. TSU is classified among R2: Doctoral Universities—High research activity.

History

The Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State Normal School for Negroes was established in 1912. In 1968, the college was finally renamed Tennessee State University. The University of Tennessee at Nashville merged with Tennessee State in 1979.

Academics & Campus

The 500-acre main campus, located in a residential setting, consists of 65+ buildings. The university is organized into eight schools and colleges: College of Public Service; College of Life and Physical Sciences; College of Liberal Arts; College of Health Sciences; College of Engineering; College of Education; College of Business; and College of Agriculture, Human, and Natural Sciences.

TSU offers 41 bachelor's degrees, 23 master's degrees, and eight doctoral degrees. The university is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. In the fall of 2020, there were 8,081 students enrolled. On campus, there are 60+ registered student organizations.

Athletics -Tigers

The sports teams play in the NCAA's Division I (FCS) as an Ohio Valley Conference member.

The Tigers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: basketball, football, cross country, golf, tennis, and track & field.

In 1957, TSU became the first HBCU to win a national basketball title. In addition, the women's track and field program won thirteen championships at the Amateur Athletic Union national senior outdoor meet. Go Blue & White!
