Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) is a public university in University Center, Michigan. It is the youngest of 15 public colleges and universities in the state.

History

Saginaw Valley College (SVC) was established in 1963 as a private institution when the state granted a charter to the college. It became state-supported in 1965 and was renamed Saginaw Valley State University in 1987. In 1970, it received full accreditation from the North Central Association.

Academics & Campus

The campus is both rural and suburban, covering 748 acres of land in Saginaw County's Kochville Township. Additionally, SVSU has a sister-college exchange relationship with Shikoku University in Tokushima, Japan.

The university offers 100+ academic programs within its five colleges. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. There are approximately 8,500 students enrolled. Some notable alumni include Congressman Bart Stupak, State Representative Matt Koleszar, and former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Rob Callaway.

Athletics -Cardinals

The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division III level as members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Cardinals athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field, volleyball, and lacrosse.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, and track & field.

In 2009-10, the men's ice hockey team won two consecutive national championships. Go Blue & Red!
