History

Originally the South Carolina Agricultural and Mechanical Institute, the school was founded in 1872 in compliance with the 1862 Land Grant Act. The institute was within Claflin College but separated in 1896 when the South Carolina General Assembly passed an act that established an individual institution. This new school was called the Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina.

In 1954, it was renamed South Carolina State College, and the legislature funded new academic facilities and dormitories in order to give African American students an equal environment. The school gained university status from the South Carolina General Assembly in 1992.
