Saint Louis University (SLU) is a private Jesuit research university in St. Louis, Missouri. It is the second-oldest Jesuit university in the nation and the oldest university west of the Mississippi River. SLU is one of 27 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Additionally, the Carnegie Classification of Institution of Higher Education classifies the school as a Research II university.

History

In 1818, the Saint Louis Academy was founded by the Most Reverand Louis William Valentine DuBourg, Bishop of Louisiana and the Floridas. In 1820, it was renamed Saint Louis College and, seven years later, placed in the care of the Society of Jesus. It soon after received its charter as a university by the act of the Missouri Legislature.

In 1832 and 1836, the university created the first graduate programs and medical school west of the Mississippi River. In 1908, it finally admitted female students. In 1967, Saint Louis University was the first Catholic university to give laypeople more power.

Academics & Campus

The campus in Midtown St. Louis spans over 282 acres of land and consists of 129 buildings. In addition to the main campus, SLU has maintained a Madrid campus in Spain for 50+ years.

The schools and colleges are the Center for Outcomes Research; School for Professional Studies; Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology; School of Law; School of Education; Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business; School of Social Work; College for Public Health and Social Justice; Center for Advanced Dental Education; School of Nursing; School of Medicine; Doisy College of Health Sciences; College of Philosophy and Letters; and College of Arts and Sciences.

Saint Louis University provides 91 undergraduate majors, 83 graduate disciplines, and 25 online programs. It is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

In 2019-20, SLU had an enrollment of 12,546 students and an additional 7,101 students in the Advanced College Credit Program. The student body represents 82+ countries and all 50 states. The university is home to more than 240 student organizations that cover several interests such as performing arts, media and publications, club sports, student government, religion, and volunteerism and service. The Greek Life at Saint Louis includes seven social fraternities and seven sororities.

Athletics -Billikens

The sports teams compete in the NCAA's Division as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

The Billikens athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field.

The women's basketball team appeared in the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the second time in 2016. Famous alumni athletes include Andy Benes, Dick Boushka, and Antony Bonner. Go Blue & White!
