Seattle University (SU) is a private Jesuit university in Seattle, Washington. It is the largest university in the Northwestern U.S.

History

In 1891, Adrian Sweere, S.J., led a small parish near downtown Seattle. Originally, the school was named after the surrounding Immaculate Conception parish and didn't provide higher education. The school was renamed Seattle College after Chief Seattle in 1898. It granted bachelor's degrees for the first time eleven years later, serving as a high school and college. In 1931, the college had a night school for women, although admitting women was controversial during that time. In 1948, the name was changed to Seattle University.

Academics & Campus

The campus covers 50 acres and is located in the city's First Hill neighborhood. The city of Seattle and EPA recognized the campus for its commitment to sustainability, food waste compost facility, energy conservation program, pesticide-free grounds, and recycling. In 1998, SU's Chapel of St. Ignatius won a national Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects.

The nine colleges at the university are the Albers School of Business and Economics, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Nursing, the College of Science and Engineering, Matteo Ricci College, the School of New and Continuing Studies, the School of Law, and the School of Theology and Ministry.

Seattle University provides 61 bachelor's, 31 graduate degree programs, 27 certificate programs, and a law school and doctoral program in education. The total enrollment of the university is 7,500+ students.
