Northern State University (NSU) is a public university in Aberdeen, South Dakota. It is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents.

History

During the late 19th century, there was rapid population growth in Aberdeen, and the citizens pushed for a government-funded institute of higher learning. In 1899, state legislator James Marshall Lawson proposed a bill to create the school, but there still needed a site and funding.

Although the Northern State Teachers College barely survived the Great Depression, in 1939, there were new additions to the campus, and the enrollment increased. During WWII, the school offered a flight and ground pilot program, a defense school, and engineering programs. Then, in 1964, the state legislature renamed it Northern State College.

In 1987, the Carnegie Commission classified Northern State as a Comprehensive I Institution, the second-highest classification a South Dakota college/university can receive. The state finally changed its name to Northern State University in 1989.
