History

The founder of Las Cruces College is Hiram Hadley, a teacher from Indiana who opened the school in 1888. The institution included an elementary school, a university preparatory school, and a business school. In 1960, it was renamed New Mexico State University by a state constitutional amendment.

The main campus occupies 900 acres with branch campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doña Ana County, Grants, and research centers across New Mexico. Through its Las Cruces campus and four community colleges, NMSU offers 28 doctoral degree programs, 58 master's degree programs, and 96 baccalaureate majors. In 2017, the total enrollment across all campuses was 21,874 students. The student body comes from all across the United States and 71 foreign countries.
