North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is a state-supported liberal arts institution and a public, historically black university in Durham, North Carolina. Since 1972, NCCU has been part of the University of North Carolina system.

History

In 1909, Dr. James E. Shepard founded the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race. The school was chartered as a private institution and funded by Woodrow Wilson and Northern and Southern philanthropists. It became the National Training School in 1915 and was sold and reorganized. The school received state funding in 1923 after becoming part of the state system and was renamed Durham State Normal School.

In 1925, the General Assembly converted the institution into the North Carolina College for Negroes, becoming the first state-supported liberal arts college for black students in the U.S. In the late 1930s and 40s, the school added graduate classes in arts and sciences as well as professional schools in law and library science. In 1969, General Assembly designated the college as a regional university and changed the name to North Carolina Central University.
