Missouri Western State University (MWSU) is a public university in Saint Joseph, Missouri.

History

Founded as St. Joseph Junior College in 1915, it was initially a two-year institution. Warren Hearnes won the general election and, a year later, transformed the college into a four-year school called Missouri Western Junior College. In 1973, it became Missouri State College and was fully supported by the state four years later. The college was granted university status in 2005. Two years later, it began offering graduate degrees.

Academics & Campus

The 744-acre campus comprises six colleges and schools: School of Nursing & Health Professions, School of Fine Arts, Craig School of Business, College of Science and Health, College of Business and Professional Studies, College of Liberal Arts, and Graduate School.

MWSU provides professional master's degrees, four-year baccalaureate programs, two-year associate degrees, pre-professional transfer programs, and one-year certificates. The Higher Learning Commission accredits it.

As of 2019, 5,412 students are enrolled. The student body represents the entire U.S. and 30+ countries. Missouri Western State University is home to 72 clubs and organizations. It is also known for its notable alumni: Roger Allen III, Charles Bruffy, David Bass, and Richard Durst.

The sports teams compete in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Griffons athletic teams include:
