Morehouse College is a private historically black men's liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia. It is the largest of its kind in the U.S. and is a member of the Atlanta University Center consortium. In 2021, Morehouse was ranked 155th overall in the U.S. News & World Report.

History

In 1867, an Atlanta Baptist minister and cabinetmaker named William Jefferson White founded the Augusta Institute. This was a response to the liberation of enslaved African Americans post-Civil War. Located in Springfield Baptist Church, the oldest independent black church in the nation, the institute educated African American men in education and theology. The school adopted a seminary university model and stressed religious instruction in the Baptist tradition.

The college has played a very important role in the development of racial equality and the civil rights movement in the U.S. In 1879, it moved to Atlanta and was renamed Atlanta Baptist Seminary. The college was renamed again to Morehouse College in 1913. This was to honor Henry L. Morehouse, corresponding secretary of the American Baptist Home Mission Society.

The main campus occupies 61 acres near downtown Atlanta. It comprises several residential dorms and academic buildings east of Ashview Heights. There are 12 residence halls total on campus, and roughly 60% of students live there.
