Longwood University is a public university in Farmville, Virginia. It is one of the hundred oldest institutions of higher education in the nation and the third-oldest public university in Virginia. According to the U.S. News & World Report, the university is ranked in the top regional universities in the South.

History

In 1839, Farmville Female Seminary Association was founded and led by a Methodist minister, Solomon Lea. The school suffered some financial difficulty during Reconstruction but recovered in 1875 when a new charter was granted. It was renamed Farmville College until 1884, when it became State Female Normal School. In 1954, it was authorized to issue graduate diplomas, and in 2002, Virginia Governor Mark Warner signed legislation designating the school as Longwood University.

Academics & Campus

The main campus comprises 154 acres and is located near downtown Farmville. Within its three colleges, there are 100+ majors and minors offered. The three colleges are: the College of Education and Human Services, the College of Business and Economics, the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences, along with the Cormier Honors College, and the College of Graduate and Professional Studies.

In addition to on-campus opportunities, there are hands-on experiences available at Yellowstone National Park as well as study-abroad programs like Greece, Costa Rica, Thailand, and China. Longwood University is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

There are approximately 5,096 students enrolled. The university is home to 20 Greek organizations and two secret societies.

Athletics -Lancers

The sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Big South Conference. The field hockey team participates in the Mid-American Conference.

The Lancers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and tennis.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis.

The sports program at Longwood has produced several professional athletes such as Tina Barrett, Jerome Kersey, and Michael Tucker. The softball team has won three Big South Championships and earned an automatic bid to an NCAA Regional three times. Go Blue, White, & Gray!
