Kentucky State University (KYSU) is a public historically black land-grant university in Frankfort, Kentucky. It is the second state-supported institution of higher learning in the state of Kentucky.

History

The State Normal School for Colored Persons was founded in 1886 and became a land-grant college three years later. In 1890, the departments of agriculture, home economics, and mechanics were added to the curriculum. The school became a university in 1972.

Academics & Campus

The college is divided into five colleges: College of Professional Studies, College of Business and Computer Science, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Agriculture, Food Science and Sustainable Systems. KYSU offers 55 undergraduate degrees, six post-graduate programs, and four associate degrees. Off campus, the university provides five liberal study degrees through the Whitney Young School of Honors and Liberal Studies.

In fall 2019, there were 2,029 undergraduates and 142 graduate students enrolled. There is a long list of famous alumni from Kentucky State, such as Rhonda Childress, Jesse Crenshaw, Charles Dazey, Anna Mac Clarke, Tom Colbert, and Alice Allison Dunnigan.

Athletics -Thorobreds, and Thorobrettes

The sports teams participate in the Division II Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The Thorobreds athletic teams include:

Women: cheerleading, basketball, softball, cross country, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, football, basketball, track & field, cross country, golf, cheerleading, and volleyball.

The men's basketball team won three straight NAIA National Titles through the years 1970-72. As of 2017, they are only the second team to do so. Go Green & Gold!
