KSU is a public land-grant research university and is ranked among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".
Founded in 1863 as the state’s land-grant college, called Kansas State Agricultural College, it was known as the first public institution of higher learning in Kansas. It was founded during the American Civil War under the Morrill Act. It was also the second public institution of higher learning to admit women and men equally in the U.S. In 1873, Kansas State helped pioneer the academic teaching of home economics for women, becoming one of the first two colleges to offer the program.
KSU was founded with an agricultural and scientific college consistent with the land-grant college mandate, as well as departments for military science and literature. It was renamed in 1959 as Kansas State University.
Academics & Campus
While its main campus is located in Manhattan, Kansas, there are also branch campuses in Salina and Olathe. The main campus covers 668 acres is known to be historical, featuring more buildings built before 1910 than any other Kansas campus. It has 12 residence halls and offers more than 400 organizations.
Kansas State offers 65 master’s degree programs and 45 doctoral degrees that are served through its 9 colleges. For the Fall 2014 semester, KSU had a record high enrollment of 24,766 students.

Athletics – Wildcats
The KSU’s sports teams, known as the Wildcats, compete in the NCAA Division I and the Big 12 Conference. K-State is the third-oldest school in the conference. Intercollegiate sports began at the college in the 1890s.
The Wildcats’ athletics program includes: basketball (M+W), baseball, football, track and field, golf (M+W), tennis, soccer, volleyball, rowing, and cross country.
Although Kansas State has not won any team NCAA championships, the athletic teams have won several individual national championships. Go Wildcats!
