The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland. It is considered the first research university in the country and is ranked 9th among U.S. national universities by the 2021 U.S. News & World Report.

History

The university was founded in 1876 and named after Johns Hopkins, the first benefactor, the American entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Johns Hopkins University became the model of the modern research university in the U.S., based on the German education model of Wilhelm von Humboldt.

The success of the school shifted higher education in the United States from a focus on teaching to a new found knowledge of science. In 1900, it became a founding member of the American Association of Universities. Since then, Johns Hopkins has led all universities in the nation in annual disbursement.

Academics & Campus

The campus is organized into ten divisions in Maryland and Washington, D.C., along with international centers in China and Italy. JHU offers 260+ programs in the arts and music, business, education, engineering, the health professions, the humanities, international studies, professions, and the social and natural sciences. It is one of fourteen founding members of the Association of American Universities as well as a member of the Universities Research Association and the Consortium on Financing Higher Education.

The university enrolls over 24,000 students who have access to 600+ undergraduate student-run clubs and organizations. Greek life began in 1876 at the school with the charter of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi. Today, it has nine sororities and 11 fraternities. As of 2019, Johns Hopkins has affiliated with one Fields Medalist and 39 Nobel laureates.

Athletics -Blue Jays

The sports teams participate in Division III and participate in the Centennial Conference. The lacrosse teams were founded in 1883 and are in NCAA Division I of the Big Ten Conference.

The Blue Jays athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, track & field, water polo, and wrestling.

The strongest team at JHU is the men's lacrosse team with its 44 national titles, 29 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, nine Division I, and six Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association titles. In 2009-10, the Blue Jays won eight Centennial Conference titles in baseball, women's cross country, football, women's tennis, women's track & field, and women's soccer. Go Blue, White & Black!
