Fort Hays State University (FHSU) is a public university in Hays, Kansas. FHSU is the fourth-largest of the six state universities governed by the Kansas Board of Regents.

History

In 1902, the school was founded as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School. Originally located on the Fort Hays grounds, the university served early settlers' educational needs. It was established as an agricultural-based school but then became a normal school.

Academics & Campus

The 200-acre main campus sits on the 4,160 acres owned by the state. Fort Hays State consists of five colleges: Technology and Mathematics; Health and Behavioral Sciences; Education; Business and Entrepreneurship; and Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

In total, the university has 31 departments that offer 60+ undergraduate majors and 20 graduate majors. Through its Virtual College, FHSU provides online degrees. The enrollment is roughly 15,100 students.

Notable alumni include NFL player Vashone Adams; personal trainer Greg Anderson; Former U.S. Senator and Former Lieutenant Governor of Kansas, Sheila Frahm; visual artist Kris Kuksi; and folk sculptor, M.T. Liggett.

Athletics -Tigers

The sports teams participate in the NCAA Division II Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The Tigers athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, cross country, track & field, tennis, and golf.

Men: football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, soccer, cross country, track & field, and golf.

The basketball teams have four national titles, and the men's team has won two national championships. In 1991, the women's team brought home the national title. Go Black & Gold!
